When Pictures Talk

Reda Asaad

It’s not my habit to take photos, although some special occasions tempt me to do.Hence my library is almost devoid of pictures that bring me together with old friends and remind me of my life’s different turning points and occasions. Now Iwish I did.

Two years ago, as our daughter Tala’s graduation date approached, my wife and I decided to prepare an album with photos and tapes that accompanied the different stages of her life with us, from childhood to university. Because the devices and technology that were used at the time have been replaced by modern ones, we had to convert them into new CDs. This wasn’t easy nor inexpensive!    Only the developed paper images did not torment us. Rather, they were readily accessible to mesmerize us by the memories they conjured.

I don’t know where the idea of documenting her birthdays with pictures came from, to tell the story of her growth journey, year by year.  On the wall of her room are twelve hanging pictures arranged according to the years of her birthday.  The first picture is of a child carried in my arms, dazzled by her first birthday cake, trying with her child’s whiff of a breath to extinguish the only candle! Her mother and I are helping her along to accomplish this.  The last photo wasof her twelfth birthday, a young woman in the making, standing between her selective friends!  Blowing out the candles with confident breaths. At the beginning of her thirteenth year, the documentation of the young chapter of her life hadceased.  It was the phase of her first steps of independence, adolescence, youth and beyond.

An amazing reel passes before our eyes, my wife and I as we leaf through our wedding pictures and our daughter’s birthdays.  Each facethat has remained within our circle tells its life story from that moment forward.  We wonder about those who are absent and where life has taken them and are saddened by the loss of those who are gone forever.  It is amazing how these images give life to past events. Their impact is stronger than any words as they embody both the word and its utterance.

Researchers say “photographs serve as memory storage and when viewed activate memory recall”. They come to you with the full spectrum of events: time, place, and context.  “A picture speaks a thousand words,” as the saying goes.

We smile when we they are taken. We exert extra care to show our best side and emotion. We fix our hair to perfection. And whenever possible wechoose who to take them with. They are chosen our best moments frozen in time.  And when we hanker for those times and wish to recall them, the pictures start talking.

They constitute a library of stories that can be read in a glimpse of an eye.

Save them from your ever-changing mobile phones. They are the archives of our memory.  And how bad would one’s memory be without archives!!
