واشنطن- تبهرني أسئلة تلاميذي البريئة والذكية في آن ! منها بالذات ما ليست لها أجوبة موثقة أومؤكدة، كالمتعلقة بالغيب ، او بعض جوانب حياتنا الحساسة، لكني و للصدق أتمتع بطرحها وأجيب عنها قدر معرفتي. وكثيرة هي الاوقات التي تجذبني مواضيعها فأقوم بالبحث والاستقصاء لتوسيع دائرة المعرفة عنها.
يسالني تلميذي: لماذا نسمي تعاقب أجيال العائلة الواحدة ” شجرة العائلة” ؟
ولأن بيني وبين الطبيعة عشق و تاريخ من الصداقة أعيشه يومياً مع عالم النباتات، أشجاراً وغرسات و وروداً، لم أجد في الاجابة عن هذا السؤال ، الذي يبدو بسيطاً، أية صعوبة ، إذ بيني وبين هذا العالم الجميل لغة خاصة لا يفهمها الاّ من أسكرته رائحة أوراق الاشجار، وأنعشه عبق براعمها و أزهارها، و تلذذ بطعم ثمارها، لهذا سمحت لنفسي ، وأنا أجيب عن سؤال تلميذي، أن أقارب بيننا نحن البشر و بين الشجرة.
تشبهنا هذه البهية كثيراً: هي الجذر و الجذع والاغصان. ونحن الجذر و الجذع والاغصان. جدوداً و أبناء و أحفاداً . بينها و بين الماء ميثاق حياة. و بيننا وبين الماء عهد بقاء. لها في جذورها و جذوعها أوعية تنقل ماءها، اكسير حياتها ،الى أغصانها مهما ارتفعت، ولنا في أجسادنا أوعية تنقل دماءنا، اكسير حياتنا ،الى الجسد و الاطراف أينما تفرعت.
بيننا وبين الشجرة بَوْحُ محبة وامتنان. قاماتها الممشوقة في الغابات وأينما سمقت، حرس حماية بيئتنا. هي مأوى لعصافيرنا وبعض حيواناتنا. هي في أوراقنا وصمغنا وأثاث بيوتنا و مراكبنا و مدافئنا. هي في نعوشنا.هي فيؤنا و ممر عليل نسائمنا. هي طبيبتنا ، و أنيستنا في النظر والصحة و المزاج.
قبل أن أنتهي من التغزل بالشجرة ،ارتسمت ابتسامة الرضا على وجه تلميذي! اذن ” شجرة العائلة ” هو الاختيار الصائب ، تصميماً وتشابهاً ، لتوثيق أجيال العائلة من الجذر الى آخر الاغصان الوارفة !
نعم هي كذلك . قلت.
و لأن من عادتي، إن سئلت عن موضوع غنيّ المادة مشوّقها، ان أحاول جهدي اعطاءه حقه في التطرق الى الكثير من جوانبه ،شرحاً و معلومات، لذا تابعت:
لاشك ان لكل عائلة شجرتها الخاصة بها، بعضها يقتصر على عدد صغير وبعضها الاخر يمتد الى مئات بل يتجاوز الالاف وأحياناً الملايين، كشجرة عائلة الفيلسوف الصيني كونفوشيوس ،والتي تعتبر أكبر شجرة عائلة في العالم ،اذ ضمت أكثر من مليوني شخص، لكن الأهم على الاطلاق ،لنا نحن البشر ،هي ” شجرة المجتمع البشري” المعلن عنها في الرابع والعشرين من شهر فبراير/ شباط من العام 2022. هذا الحدث العلمي الخارق الذي تجاوزت أهميته شجرات العائلات العادية في دراسة علمية غاية في الاهمية ،في ما يخص نسب البشرية منذ اكثر من مليوني سنة . وصفها كل من أنتوني وايلدر وونسن الباحث في مركز برود للبحوث العملية في معهد ماساتشوستس للتكنولوجيا وجامعة هارفارد العريقين في الولايات المتحدة الامريكية، و يان وونغ الباحث في معهد البيانات الضخمة في جامعة اكسفورد في بريطانيا، بأنها، اي شجرة العائلة البشرية: ” شجرة لسلسلة نسب البشرية جمعاء. و البشر هم محور هذه الشجرة.هي خريطة معقدة للجينوم البشري الذي يحدد القرابة بين مختلف المجموعات البشرية الحالية جيلا بعد جيل ،حتى نشاة أسلافنا البعيدين في افريقيا. وهي أكبر شجرة عائلة للبشر تصف أصلنا و توسعنا حول العالم استناداً الى الاختلافات الجينية. وسوف تسهم في تحديد الامراض المستعصية و طرق علاجها.”
إذن، هي شجرة تشملنا كلنا نحن البشر،فقراء وأغنياء. لا ألقاب ولا مناصب.

The Human Family Tree

My bright students never fail to astonish me with their innocent yet very thoughtful questions! Many do not have documented or confirmed answers, such as those related to the unscientific world of theology or other sensitive aspects of our lives. Yet, I enjoy their inquiries and endeavor to answer them to the best of my knowledge. Many times, their topics intrigue me, prompting me to research and investigate further to expand my knowledge about them.
One of my students asks me: “Why do we call the succession of generations within one family ‘the family tree’?” Since I have a deep love and long-standing friendship with nature, living daily with the world of plants—trees and flowers—I couldn’t find a straightforward answer to this seemingly simple question. Between me and this beautiful world lies a special language and bond understood only by those who are taken by the scent of tree leaves, the fragrance of its buds and blossoms, and those who relish in the taste of its fruits. Therefore, I allowed myself, as I answered my student’s question, to liken it to us humans.
Indeed, a tree resembles us greatly: It has roots, trunks, and branches, just as we have ancestors, children, and grandchildren. Between it and water is a covenant of life, and between us and water is a covenant of survival. In its roots and trunks are vessels that transport water, the elixir of its life to its branches no matter how high they reach, just as in our bodies have vessels-veins and arteries that carry our blood, the elixir of our lives, throughout our body and to our limbs wherever they branch out.
Between us and the tree is a whisper of love and gratitude. Its graceful figures in the forests, and wherever it may thrive, guard, and protect our environment. It is a refuge for our birds and some of our animals. It is in our paper, furniture, boats, and hearths. It is in our coffins. It moves the air and the gentle passage of our breezes. It is the source of remedies for our physical and mental health.
Before I finished extolling the virtues of the tree, a smile of satisfaction appeared on my student’s face! So, “the family tree” is indeed the right choice, both in design and resemblance, to document the generations of family from the root to the lush branches!
“Yes, it is,” I said.
And because it is my habit, when asked about a rich and intriguing topic, to try my best to give it its full due diligence by addressing many aspects of it, I continued:
Certainly, every family has its own tree, some limited to a small number, while others extend to hundreds, thousands or even millions, like the family tree of the Chinese philosopher Confucius, considered the largest family tree in the world, encompassing over two million individuals. But most importantly, for us humans, there is “the tree of humanity” as declared on February 24, 2022, by a study that gives the view of 2 million years of pre-history and evolution of mankind. This extraordinary scientific event has elevated the significance of ordinary family trees to immensely important scientific research. As described by its primary authors, Anthony Wilder Wonse, a researcher at the Broad Institute of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University, and Yan Wong, a researcher at the Big Data Institute at the University of Oxford, “this study is a tree that collectively maps out human genealogy. Humans are the focus of this tree. It is a complex map of the human genome that delineates the relationship between different human groups, generation after generation, to the emergence of our distant ancestors in Africa. And it is the largest family tree for humans describing our origins and expansion around the world based on genetic differences. will contribute to identifying stubborn diseases and methods of healing from them.”
So, it is the Human tree that includes all of humans, regardless of wealth or poverty, titles or positions- a tree that gathers humanity to serve humanity.
