The Horse …. And the Nightmare of Our Times

Reda Asaad

Washington Last night, I awoke from a terrifying nightmare.

A “smart” missile struck a horse stable.

The horses’ bodies and severed limbs flew through the air and fell without a whinny. One horse staggered out, drenched in blood. Its wounds bore no trace of a spear’s cast, a dagger’s thrust, or a sword’s blow. They were burns and shrapnel wounds.

Yet it whinnied with dignity.

It charged forward as though into battle or a race, carrying on its back a mother shielding her child with her own body. The horse reared high on its hind legs, celebrating their survival. The child fell into my arms.

I woke with a cry.

Even after awakening, the scene remained alive within me, raging as though it were still unfolding before my eyes. That was the nightmare: a stable of horses torn apart, their bodies shredded by the shrapnel of a deranged machine. A horse pounded the earth with its hooves, its whinny piercing the air. It raised its forelegs, declaring that the calamity before it was greater than anything courage or training could overcome. It looked toward the mother and her child, reassured that they were still under its protection—two riders upon its back.

Every dream-and every nightmare-raises questions when the dreamer awakens.

Why? and What? are the questions we ask most often in search of explanation and reassurance.

Why the noble horse? Why the “smart” missile? Why the young mother and her infant? Why so much blood? What invaded the landscape of my dreams and placed before me such a nightmare? And why did it choose the horse as its hero?

Our daughter loved horseback riding. As a child, she pursued it with genuine passion. Before mounting, we would watch her stroke the horse’s head, gently caress its face, and speak to it. The horse always seemed to answer in its own silent, graceful way.

Eventually she developed an allergy to horses. Her doctor forbade her from going near them. Years after she had stopped riding, she wept while looking at an old photograph of herself embracing a horse’s head.

Every day I read about and watch hundreds of victims killed by a single “smart” missile, a single “smart” bomb, or a convoy of “smart” drones.

There are no horsemen anymore.

No chivalry.

Only machines.

For thousands of years, this magnificent creature-the horse-has embodied beauty, nobility, and honor. It accompanied travelers, shared the hardships of war, and often led the charge into battle. Empires rose to the sound of its whinny. Upon its back, horsemen drew the borders of nations, civilizations were built, and the destinies of peoples were decided.

The horse became a symbol of heroism, loyalty, patience, and dignity.

It was also humanity’s faithful companion in travel.

It belonged to no nationality, race, color, religion, or language. It was-and remains-a horse in every corner of the world: noble in appearance, proud in bearing, loyal, patient, standing tall with the dignity of its rider.

Like human beings, horses have different breeds.

Then the horse-the hero of my dream-told me its story in a few fleeting moments:

“A foolish enemy tried to pierce my body and destroy my family. It came from a place unknown to me-and unknown even to itself. I was denied the chance to confront it. These are not my wars. The mind behind them is not of my kind. I declared defeat, yet I did not lose the battle. I emerged from the flames carrying motherhood and innocence.”

Our daughter’s horse-intelligent by instinct, beautiful, proud, and noble-and a machine of death, “smart” by human design, together composed, directed, and staged a dream that could never be peaceful.

The industry of war triumphs through its crimes.

The creation of beauty retreats with its purity.

This is the nightmare of our age.
